What does vape wattage mean?

A watt is a unit of power, and wattage is a way of measuring the power of something electrical; for example, lightbulbs are categorised by wattage, such as a 60-watt bulb.

So, in vaping, vape wattage is the amount of power that is used by your vape device. Variable wattage vape mods allow you to adjust the wattage, or amount of power, that is used by your vape.

Some vape mods have a set wattage that can’t be changed. But, if you have a variable wattage vape device then you can alter the wattage to suit your particular vaping style.

How does wattage affect your vape?

There are plenty of different ways you can customise your vape experience, from e-liquid flavours to the style of atomiser or vape tank you use and the mouthpiece that you inhale from.

Variable wattage vape devices allow you to further customise your vape experience and provide a lot more customisation options than set wattage devices.

With variable wattage vape devices, you’re able to decide what wattage to vape each time you take a hit from your vape device. So, you can pick the level that suits you best.

Changing the amount of power that is used by your device will affect how much electricity flows through to the coil in your vape tank and as a result affects the temperature of the coil. The more power you have flowing to the coil, the hotter it will get and, therefore, the more e-liquid that will be vapourised.

So, the higher the wattage, the more electricity flows to the coil, and the more vapour is produced for you to inhale and you may feel a stronger hit of nicotine.

What wattage to vape

Because everyone is different, and every vaper is different, there’s no one set wattage level that will suit everyone, which is the beauty of variable wattage devices!

When you have one of these types of vape mods, you can pick what works best for you, but there are some general guidelines to follow to help you find the right vape wattage to pick for you depending on what you want to get out of your vape.

What wattage to vape if you want more vapour

Like we’ve already said, the higher the wattage on your vape mod, the more vapour will be produced, this is because the coil gets hotter and vapourises more e-liquid.

For sub-ohm vapers and those looking for thicker, warmer vapour production, then higher wattages are better. However, be aware that vaping at a higher wattage will use up more e-liquid as more gets vapourised with each hit.

But, before you crank up the wattage as high as it’ll go, you need to check the highest recommended wattage range for your vape device. You should be able to find this written on the coil.

It’s not advised to go over the recommended wattage as you may find your coil burns out faster than expected and you need to replace them more frequently, which is both costly and can be dangerous if you repeatedly vape on a burnt coil.

However, if you’d prefer a cooler vape experience with less vapour produced, then you can turn the wattage down on your device. This might be preferred, for example, if you were trying to inconspicuously vape indoors as there will be a smaller cloud of vapour to draw attention to what you’re doing.

What wattage to vape if you want a smoother vape flavour

What wattage you vape at won’t just affect the amount of vapour produced, it can also change the flavour you experience of your chosen e-liquid.

Generally, if you prefer to vape the sweeter, creamier e-liquids, then it is best to vape on a higher wattage. But, if you are more of a fan of the menthol type flavour vape juices, then vaping on a lower wattage is best to get the most flavour out of each hit.

Customising your vape device’s wattage to the different type of vape juices you use will help you to have a more enjoyable flavour experience.

If you’re the type of vaper who changes up their flavours quite often, and you change between sweet flavours and menthol vape juices, then you might want to change up your wattage each time you change flavour types to get the most out of each hit of your vape.

What wattage to vape if you want a stronger throat hit

Changing your vape device’s wattage can change the type of throat hit you experience when you inhale from your vape. If you’re looking for a stronger throat hit then turning up the wattage will help you experience a more intense throat hit that is closer to inhaling a cigarette; which is great for people using vaping as a way to quit smoking.

And, conversely, if you want a smoother vape experience, then turning down the wattage on your vape device will reduce the intensity of your throat hit.

Ultimately, what wattage to vape depends on a lot of factors and what your goal is with vaping. But, it’s good to bear in mind that whenever you vape at a higher wattage, you’re going to be using a lot more battery. So, if you are planning to regularly vape at a higher wattage, we recommend carrying around a spare battery or two to ensure your vape always has power.
