What Is E-Liquid?

E-liquid, vape juice, e-cigarette liquid or vape liquid – whatever you call it, you’re referring to the liquid mixture of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, nicotine and flavouring, which is heated inside your vape to create the vapour you breathe.

Learn more about what’s inside e-liquid.

There are many different types of e-liquid, with differing strengths, flavours, brands and ratios, and finding the right one can massively enhance your vaping experience.

What Are PG and VG Ratios?

You might have seen these letters on your e-liquid or when doing your research. These refer to the amount of propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG) in your e-liquid.

While there is a degree of personal choice in what ratio you prefer, you also have to keep in mind what device you’re using.

Your PG to VG ratio in e-liquid doesn’t count the nicotine or flavourings, so will always add up to 100. 50/50 PG/VG is a standard e-liquid, but you can get high-PG products, with over 60% PG, or high-VG e-liquid, with over 60% VG. At Vape Town, most of our e-liquids tend to be either 50/50 PG/VG or 70/30 VG/PG.

  • Propylene Glycol (PG) is thinner, with a similar viscosity to water, creates less vapour and is typically used in lower-powered vapes. E-liquid with a high PG content usually gives a stronger throat hit, making it popular among those using vaping as an aid to quit smoking.
  • Vegetable Glycerine (VG) is thicker and creates more, denser vapour. Its consistency means it is suited to higher-powered vapes, as it takes more heat to evaporate, making high e-liquid with high VG content ideal for cloud chasers!

PG and VG are frequently used in other consumer products, including food products, cosmetics and medicines.

What Are the Best Vape Juice Flavours?

If you are transitioning from smoking to vaping, you may find that starting out, you prefer tobacco or menthol e-liquid flavours. Since they closely replicate the taste of smoking a cigarette, they can make it a little easier to quit.

However, when you’ve been vaping for a while, you may want to branch out into the incredible world of different vape flavours. There are hundreds of different e-liquid flavours available, and finding your favourite can be fun!

Of course, if flavoured vape juice isn’t your thing, then there’s also the option to go flavourless.

What Is the Best Vape Juice Brand?

Our wide range of e-cig liquids comes from some of the most popular vape juice brands in the UK and worldwide, including Icy, Doozy Vape Co and Slush Bucket, and we regularly update our range to satisfy all our customer’s vaping tastes and needs.

We also offer our own brand of e-liquid in a wide range of flavours and nicotine levels.

What Is TPD Compliance?

TPD is short for the Tobacco Products Directive, an initiative implemented by the MHRA to regulate provisions and restrictions to the sale of nicotine-containing vaping products.

TPD compliance simply means that every element of the products you’re seeing are compliant with these regulations, including their design, manufacture, packaging and sale.

The legislation was originally introduced in the UK in 2017. Since leaving the EU, vaping products containing nicotine in Great Britain and Northern Ireland are regulated under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016 (TRPR). This sets out the minimum standards for the safety and quality of all e-liquids.

What Nicotine Strength Should I Use?

When buying e-liquid, one of the decisions you need to make is what you want the nicotine level to be. At Vape Town, we offer the following nicotine levels:

  • 0mg
  • 3mg
  • 5mg
  • 6mg
  • 10mg
  • 12mg
  • 18mg
  • 20mg

Freebase nicotine is normally available in 3mg, 6mg, 12mg or 18mg, whereas nic salts are typically available in 5mg, 10mg or 20mg.

But what does that mean?

Well, a smoker absorbs roughly between one and two milligrams of nicotine from a single cigarette, so a bottle of 20mg e-liquid contains a similar amount of nicotine to a pack of twenty cigarettes. Of course, this isn’t an exact science, as it depends on what cigarettes you’re smoking and how much nicotine you inhale.

20mg is usually a good starting point for heavy smokers who are looking to start vaping. A light smoker may be better suited to 3mg-6mg.

This is just a loose guide – every vaper is different, so it’s important that you work out your preferred level of nicotine through simply trying a few out. You can always lower the strength if you don’t feel you need it, or use a stronger e-liquid if it’s not working for you.

Different Types of E-Liquid

Nic Salt

Nic salts are ideal for those looking for a smoother throat hit without losing any of the nicotine strength. They are ready to use, and don’t need to be added to a shortfill.

Learn more about nic salts.

Nic Shot

Also known as freebase nicotine, nic shots are pure nicotine, and are used with shortfills to create larger amounts of e-liquid or customise the amount of nicotine in the e-liquid. Many of our shortfill e-liquids come with nicotine shots included.

Nic shots are known for having a stronger throat hit when compared to nic salts.

You can also try Nic Ice Shots, which are nic shots with an added coolness to them, providing an icy sensation.

Shortfill

A shortfill is a larger bottle of nicotine-free e-liquid, with space left in the bottle for you to add your nic shot if you would like to.

In order to remain TPD compliant, e-liquid can only be sold in 10ml bottles. However, the TPD regulations only apply to vaping products which contain nicotine, so shortfills are exempt as you can choose to add the nicotine yourself (you can also choose to vape nicotine-free).

At Vape Town, we sell shortfills in 50ml, 100ml and 200ml sizes.

How to Store E-Liquids

There are a few things to keep in mind to ensure you’re storing your e-liquids safely.

  • Store them in a cool, dry environment, ideally somewhere dark but definitely out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep e-liquids in their original packaging – the packaging is designed to be TPD compliant and ensure the e-liquid is protected, so it’s not a good idea to decant them into other containers.
  • Ensure e-liquids are stored out of the reach of children, pets or any other vulnerable individuals, as ingesting e-liquid directly can be harmful.
  • Always check expiration dates to ensure that your e-liquids are safe to use, and shake the bottle before using.

Can I Use Any Type of E-Liquid in My Vape?

In general, yes, you can use any e-liquid in your vape. However, certain e-liquids are best suited to specific types of devices. For example, if you’re choosing to vape a high VG content e-liquid, you may find that a lower-wattage devices struggles to evaporate it due to its viscosity.

If you’re really not sure about what type of e-liquid is suitable for your vape, 50/50 PG/VG e-liquids tend to be suitable for most devices, and are a great place to start for beginner vapers.

If you’re not sure how to get started with your e-liquid, it’s usually best to just pick up a few flavours that you like the sound of and give it a go. And, if you’re new to vaping altogether, pick up a starter vape kit or check out our guide on how to vape for beginners on our blog.
